BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Enkema works with adults in the Anxiety Center.

Dr. Enkema is committed to evidence-based or “known to work” treatments for mental health difficulties. He has substantial experience treating mood and anxiety disorders, including problems related to post-traumatic stress. He has experience working with clients experiencing a variety of anxiety-related disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), specific phobias, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). He has worked in settings with clients experiencing varying levels of distress, ranging from outpatient psychotherapy clinics to inpatient units and specialty medicine clinics. In addition, he has received specialized training in addiction treatment and has considerable experience working with people struggling with co-occurring mental health difficulties and substance use problems.

Dr. Enkema earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the APA-accredited program at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle and his undergraduate degree in psychology from Seattle University. His research in graduate school was focused on investigating mindfulness-based treatments, with an emphasis on how dispositional mindfulness is related to recovery from mental health challenges. Dr. Enkema completed an APA-accredited predoctoral clinical internship at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, Seattle Division. He also received advanced clinical training as a postdoctoral fellow through the Center of Excellence in Substance Addiction Treatment and Education (CESATE) at VA Puget Sound.

Dr. Enkema has received extensive training in the action-oriented cognitive and behavioral principles that form the foundation for numerous scientifically supported treatments for problems in living related to mental and behavioral health. He flexibly applies these principles in his practice to tailor treatment to meet the needs of each individual client, based on the scientific research. Additionally, Dr. Enkema integrates humanistic, insight-oriented, and relationship-focused approaches, such as Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) and Motivational Interviewing (MI), to support and facilitate rapid and durable behavior change. He has particular expertise in MI and has provided numerous trainings on the topic for hundreds of health care professionals during the last decade.

Dr. Enkema is a licensed psychologist in the State of Washington.
