Specialty Outpatient Therapy for Children, Adolescents, and Adults
Evidence-Based Treatment in Seattle and Across Washington
What Is Outpatient Therapy?
Outpatient treatment is appropriate when:
- Symptoms interfere with daily functioning but do not require daily structured care
- School, work, or family life can continue alongside treatment
- Safety can be maintained without intensive supervision
- Skills can be practiced between sessions

What to Expect at Your First Appointment
Starting therapy can feel uncertain. Our first appointment is designed to bring clarity.During the initial session, your clinician will:
- Gather detailed information about symptoms, history, and current concerns
- Ask about school, work, relationships, and daily functioning
- Explore previous treatment experiences, if any
- Identify specific goals for therapy
- Assess whether outpatient treatment is the appropriate level of care
For children and adolescents, parents or caregivers are typically involved in the assessment process. For adults, partners or family members may be included if helpful.By the end of the evaluation phase, you will have:
- A clearer understanding of what is happening
- An explanation of recommended next steps and options for treatment directions
- A collaborative discussion with your therapist about the specific course of treatment selected.
You are not expected to arrive with a diagnosis. Our role is to evaluate carefully and guide you.
How Treatment Works: Active, Structured, and Goal-Focused
Clear Goals
Early in treatment, we define specific, observable goals. These might involve:
- Returning to school consistently
- Reducing avoidance
Improving emotional regulation - Decreasing compulsive behaviors
- Increasing independence
- Improving sleep or daily functioning
Goals are individualized and revisited regularly.
Active Skill Development
Sessions focus on:
- Learning practical tools
- Building coping and regulation strategies
- Addressing patterns that maintain symptoms
- Gradually facing avoided situations
Therapy is collaborative. Clients are active participants in the process.
Practice Between Sessions
Progress happens not only in session, but between sessions. Clients often practice skills outside of therapy through:
- Structured exercises
Behavioral experiments - Gradual exposure tasks
- Parent-implemented strategies at home
- Tracking symptoms or progress
This real-world practice is one of the strongest predictors of improvement.
Monitoring Progress
We regularly evaluate:
- Symptom severity
- Functional improvement
- Goal attainment
- Areas needing adjustment
Treatment plans are refined based on data and clinical judgment. If outpatient care is not sufficient, we discuss options openly and collaboratively.
Parent and Family Involvement
For children and adolescents, caregiver involvement is often essential.
Parents may:
- Learn strategies to respond to anxiety or behavioral patterns
- Participate in structured sessions
- Support skill practice at home
- Coordinate with schools when needed
For adults, partner or family involvement is included when clinically helpful. Effective outpatient treatment extends beyond the therapy room.
How Long Does Outpatient Therapy Last?
- Specific intervention needed
- Severity and complexity of symptoms
- Co-occurring concerns
- Consistency of skill practice
- Individual goals
In-Person and Telehealth Outpatient Therapy
We offer outpatient therapy:
- In person at our Seattle and Bellingham locations
- Via secure telehealth throughout Washington
- In PSYPACT-participating states when eligible
Research supports the effectiveness of structured, evidence-based therapy delivered via telehealth when provided by trained specialists. The decision between in-person and virtual care is made collaboratively based on clinical needs and practical considerations.
When Outpatient Therapy May Not Be Enough
Outpatient care is highly effective for many individuals. However, if symptoms:
- Significantly impair daily functioning
- Require daily structured intervention
- Involve safety concerns that cannot be managed at the outpatient level of care
- Do not improve despite consistent outpatient care
We may recommend a higher level of care. Because EBTCS offers intensive programs, transitions can be coordinated seamlessly when needed.
Is It Time to Reach Out?
Many families and adults wonder whether concerns are “serious enough.” Waiting is common — but early intervention is associated with faster improvement and better long-term outcomes.
If symptoms are interfering with daily life, even gradually, a consultation can help clarify next steps.
You do not need:
- A referral
- A diagnosis
- Complete certainty
You just need to start the conversation.
