EBTCS now offers a complete Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT) program (individual therapy and skills training class) for adolescents with problems of emotional overcontrol. Elizabeth LoTempio, Psy.D., who was intensively trained by the treatment developer, Tom Lynch, PhD, and DBT staff psychologist Jared Michonski, PhD are now leading a multi-family skills class for teens with chronic depression, anorexia nervosa, or other difficulties resulting from too much control over their emotions and associated behavior. This treatment has been used in the UK for some time, but is relatively new to the US. Clients typically experience intense emotion, but have difficulty recognizing the emotion, instead responding with structure, control, social withdrawal, rigidity, and/or perfectionism. Data support this treatment for use with chronic depression that has notresponded to other treatment, and Dr. Lynch is currently investigating its efficacy with anorexia nervosa and other disorders associated with overcontrol. We can help you determine if your teen is a good candidate for this treatment. It involves individual therapy and a skills training class that includes parents and teaches RO-DBT skills aimed specifically at increasing flexibility, openness, and social connectedness. For more information about the treatment, visit Dr. Lynch’s website: Radically Open DBT (RO-DBT).
