Adolescent focused therapy has also been studied in randomized controlled trials and has demonstrated promising results in the treatment of adolescent eating disorders. This treatment focuses on addressing the issues underlying the eating disorder and increasing the adolescent’s self-esteem. Elements of the treatment include helping the adolescent to better identify his or her emotions, tolerate negative emotions rather than numbing themselves or avoiding feelings, develop appropriate self-care with regard to food intake, and return to healthy adolescent development. The majority of the sessions take place one-on-one with the adolescent, but parents’ involvement is critical.
